Liverpool Team in Egremont

The New Directions Education team in Liverpool recently leant a hand to Egremont Primary School. They assisted with the schools ambition to create a forest classroom. On Tuesday 14th February, a team of volunteers donated their time and energies to start clearing debris and levelling out the intended location for the project. Egremont would like to emulate the success of Heswall Primary School, who introduced a forest class room to their students.

The notion of a forest school is to create outdoor classrooms which allow children to get involved with nature. It allows youngsters to develop confidence through hands-on learning.

Lisa Harper, branch manager for the Liverpool office says “We initially got involved with this project with a donation of £250 to the school. However, after hearing more about the impact the project could have on the children at Egremont we really wanted to get stuck in. So…we did, quite literally – with our wellies and spades. We would ask anyone else in the area who could possibly get involved to do so”.

After a day’s hard work on the site, Alan Doyle, school business manager, commented “I saw the garden for the first time about an hour after the team left. I couldn’t believe how different the area looked. It looks like a garden now. When the soil is in, and the planting is done, the area will be fantastic”.

The next stage is obtaining an estimated 15 tonnes of soil for the site. The school are looking for any assistance, no matter how big or small to make this happen. It have been suggested that a chain gang of pupils may be able to shift the soil in small bucket loads.
