Year 9 pupils from Llanwern High School in Newport have taken part in an Apprentice-style competition as part of Business Enterprise week at the school. Students were split into teams of six and asked to run a coffee shop at the school for the upcoming Youth Games event.

The project involved the teams putting together a full business proposal which included creating a name and brand, choosing the products to be sold, space-planning for the café location and details of profit and loss accounts.

Ajaz Mozher, Branch Manager for New Directions Education and sponsor of the event commented: “It is great to see pupils in Wales being given the opportunity to run a very real business. In preparing the students for life the other side of education the school adds gravitas to the curriculum they deliver. We would like to congratulate all who took part and the eventual winners – team Glas who each received a £20 prize.”

After presenting their findings to the panel, which consisted of Natasha Francis from Young Enterprise, Helen Devitt from Construction Youth Trust and Fiona Argent of Acorn People the winning team was announced.

Llanwern High School will now set up a business club in the new academic year with the aim of creating more young enterprise within the school and providing opportunities for pupils to gain real-life experience.
