Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg Celebrate Fifty Years

On Friday 23 November 2012 Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg celebrated fifty years of being open with a Gala evening. The School opened as Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelin in 1962. At that time Mr Gwilym Humphries was at the helm as school headmaster. When the school initially opened it was the first Welsh Medium Comprehensive in South Wales and only the second in all of Wales.

2006 saw the school re-locate premises and a name change to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Garth Olwg, with Mr Peter Griffiths as headmaster. Throughout the schools fifty year history, it has produced many notable pupils: including Richard Harrington (actor), Daniel Evan (actor), Magi Dodd (presenter on Radio Cymru) and Kevin Morgan (Welsh international rugby player).

The gala event was a fantastic celebration of the rich history of the school. Dafydd Henry, Account Manager for New Directions Welsh language medium team commented ‘We wish the school, and the current Head teacher Mrs Angela Williams all the very best for the next 50 years.’
