New Directions Education Manchester recently met with students from Oldham College to assist them in their preparations for their first round of job opportunities. The students from Oldham and the surrounding areas are studying Teaching Assistant and Nursery Nurse Courses or undertaking Apprenticeships with employers.

The link between the company and the college started earlier in the academic year when course tutor Anne – Marie Thompson invited New Directions Business Development Officer Stuart Ash to the College to talk to students from his perspective as a former respected secondary school Head teacher now working with the company to develop links with schools and colleges.

Anne Marie said “Following on from your recent visits, which the students found really useful as it helped them gain a greater understanding of the options available to them, the support around, and an understanding of what schools could be looking for. Thank you for all your help”

Stuart was able to offer his experience of recruiting for the children’s workforce to assist students with their preparations for interviews, along with CVs and letter of applications. Students were able to reflect on their experiences to date as well as getting an employer’s perspective.

Stuart said “It was a real pleasure to work with such keen and enthusiastic groups of students. I am certain they will be a real asset to any future employer. The students seemed determined to prepare well for their future careers and were keen to pick up tips that would help them secure that often elusive first permanent job”

New Directions Education believes it is an important part of their role in the wider community to work with local colleges in helping them prepare their students with employability skills.
