A local school boy from St Giles School in Wrexham has beaten off competition from across the UK to win a national design competition. Natan Somerfeld aged 8 entered the annual competition, which is run by education recruitment and training specialist New Directions Education to design their annual corporate Christmas card.

The competition has run for several years, and is a highlight in the company’s calendar. This year the standard of entries was described as excellent. Jeff Tune, Chairman for the company commented ‘Our senior management team have the task each year for choosing the winning entry for the Christmas card competition. The standards of submission are always very high so choosing just one is not always easy. We received entries from schools across the UK and each region had a unique take on the festive season.’

New Directions Education received over 120 submissions for the competition from a range of age groups. Natan’s card was one of 20 cards that were shortlisted before being judged anonymously. Account Manager Dan Bailey travelled to St Giles School on Friday 6 December to present Natan with an artist pack and Certificate. Speaking about the competition he said ‘Finding out that one of the schools in North Wales had won the UK wide competition was brilliant. At New Directions Education we have close working relationships with the schools in our local areas and we work with them to support them with a wide range of activities. The Christmas card competition gets the children involved and helps them express what the festive season means to them’

As well as winning the opportunity to turn his design into a card for New Directions to distribute, Natan also won an IPad for the school. Head teacher Mr Darlington was delighted with the digital tablet and said ‘The children enjoyed completing their entries, producing some excellent pieces of art work.  We were all very excited to hear that Natan had won the national Christmas card competition.  He will have many hours of fun with his art pack and the school with the iPad.  This resource will be invaluable within our teaching and learning at St Giles’.
