Supporting Newly Qualified Teachers in the local community

On Thursday 2nd July, leading recruitment and training provider, New Directions Education delivered a seminar to Newly Qualified Teachers in Swansea focusing on how the education sector is moving forward into the technological era.

Former Headteacher, now NQT mentor, Ed Berry talked to the students about the key issues and changes in their practices during their NQT Induction year. Ed spoke about how the 55 Practicing Teaching Standards have moved from paper to online and how to make the most out of the year.

Ruth Dalton, Group Head of Communications for New Directions talked to the delegates about protecting their professional reputation and staying safe online, in particular the use of social media. Adding comment, Ruth said “social media grows and advances daily, the aim of this session is to give students advance warning of the impact of their own activity on their digital footprint for the future. We talk of the positives using social media correctly can have, but we also offer some serious tips about staying safe online within the teaching profession.”

Business Development Officer for the New Directions team, and also former West Wales Head – Adrian Mason gave invaluable advice to NQT’s regarding filling in application forms. The attendees also heard from Safeguarding officer Bob Meier who explored the growing issue of safeguarding whilst teaching supply.

One newly qualified teacher who attended the event commented, “The information given from the former Headteachers with regards to the induction year and interview tips was particularly useful.”

Laura Bosomworth, Branch Manager for New Direction Education Swansea said, “This event is key for NQT’s to get a step ahead of their colleagues in the search for a job following graduation. It also gives them the opportunity to meet their Account Manager and register with New Directions for supply work.”
