Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) encourages girls to take up rugby

The WRU have launched cluster centres for girls around Wales to encourage mass participation in the girl’s game. One centre based at Llanwern High School in Newport will be named ‘Newport Knights’.

Ex-Welsh international and Head of Participation at the WRU Ryan Jones launched the centre earlier this year, where he put 22 Year 9 girls through their paces with fun drills throughout the morning. The girls are now the faces of the centre with the WRU TV filming at the launch which is now live on the website and on programmes such as ‘Rygbi Pawb’.

Llyr Davies, Rugby Office at Llanwern High School commented, “Many of these girls have only had a brief taster of rugby in their PE lessons, so it was great to see them engaging and being enthusiastic about a new sport.”

Dominic Yarwood, Account Manager at New Directions attended the launch event and Rhian Dobson, Supply Coordinator at the school talks about how much they appreciate the extra support“as a service provider, it’s fantastic that New Directions supports the school and the local community.”

Jon Evans, Branch Manager comments, “Perhaps one of the most pivotal factors contributing to the success of New Directions Education has been our unwavering support of diversity and equal opportunities. It goes without saying that this forward thinking initiative created by the WRU is in line with our own values we hold close as a company.”
