Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour Catholic Primary were crowned the winners of Widnes Championship Rugby Festival on Thursday 16th June this year.

After lots of rain and a thunder storm in the afternoon there was a lot of uncertainty as to whether the event would take place, luckily by 4pm the rain had cleared to make way for clear skies to let play go ahead. After a strong start in the first half it was tough to call the winner. The Our Lady’s Captain took him team to victory by scoring the winning try.

Lauran Collins, Account Manager for New Directions Education Wirral branch and First Team player Alex Gerrard who is currently out injured presented the trophy at half time of the main game in front of a crowd of seven thousand fans from both Widnes and Wigan.

Pam McGuffie Headteacher of Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour Catholic Primary said of the victory “I am so proud of all the children in our school. They constantly demonstrate high standards of behaviour and respect both in and out of school. We are so lucky also to be able to develop close community links, especially with the Vikings and as a school we appear to be going from strength to strength. In part this is due to the dedication, support and hard work our fantastic staff and parents, especially Mr Solely, who has been training the children in our after school Rugby club”

This event will be happening again next year and New Directions Education have signed up to be a sponsor to continue with working with the Vikings Sports foundation at Widnes Vikings.
