Winners girls cup

The annual Cardiff City Community Foundation and New Directions Education girls under 13 football cup winners for 2017 was concluded yesterday in a dramatic penalty shootout.

YGG Llangynwyd pipped a very impressive Bryncelynog to the trophy with an intense session after a game that saw both sides miss vital chances to snatch victory.

Speaking about the final and the annual tournament, Howard Burge, National Director said ‘this competition produces increasingly brilliant performances year on year. The challenge for foundation will now surely become handling the amount of interest in girls’ football. All teams that took part should be exceptionally proud, and their coaches and co-ordinators were quite inspirational to listen to on the side lines. Big congratulations however must go to YGG Llangynwyd who went on to win the tournament’.

Football for girls in Wales is growing. The FAW have an ambitious target of 20,000 affiliated players by 2022. Ruth Dalton, Group Head of Communications and Marketing for New Directions who watched the tournament unfold said ‘I have had the privilege of watching this tournament year on year; the standard of performance continues to impress me. Girls football is making headlines and the ambition of the schools, FAW and of course Cardiff City Community Foundation is very evident’.

Over 20 year 7 and 8 teams signed up for the tournament from across Wales travelled to Cardiff International Sports Stadium to take part in the competition. The competitors were delighted to have a visit from first team players Kadeem Harris and Jazz Richards who presented both the winners and the runners up with their medals (pictured).
