New Directions Host Event to Support Newly Qualified Teachers

On Wednesday 5th September 2018, New Directions Education held the second of their Newly Qualified Teacher Seminars at their Cardiff head office.

The leading education agency have facilitated these drop-in sessions for over half a decade, dedicated to equipping those teaching professionals fresh from university with a wider outlook on the current education recruitment landscape.

Guest speakers included Mark Phipps – Qualifications and Registrations Manager from the Education Workforce Council (EWC) who spoke about how the organisation can support new Teachers and what they need to do to complete their induction year, exploring the code of conduct and offering handy tips.

Emma Volkes, Headteacher from Stacey Primary gave an inspirational talk on her journey from Supply to her current role. Emma started her teaching career as a supply through New Directions and by working hard and accepting a variety of bookings in different schools she was offered very quickly a contract at Stacey Primary.

From there she worked her way up to Headteacher. She told the audience that they should not be disheartened that they currently did not have a permanent contract and supply work was a fantastic way to sample various schools and get your name recognised within an LEA.

Peter Cornelius, New Directions Business Development Officer and former Headteacher gave some excellent tips and handouts on preparation and getting the most out of supply. He told the audience that the world of work they were entering whilst being challenging, is a fantastic career and they would have an enormous impact on changing children’s lives. If he had the opportunity he would do it all over again.

New Directions Account Manager, Chloe Evans ended the evening with a presentation on working for the business, expectations and procedures and what we can do to assist the process.

Alyson Harrington, Branch Manager for Cardiff Primary said of the event

I am delighted the way in which the evening went and the number of NQT’s that took the time to attend. We currently have over 70 NQT’s that have registered with us this year and our Account Managers are doing their utmost to promote these teachers out to schools. We wish our teachers all the very best in their induction year and they can count on our continuous support.
