Job Description

New Directions Education are working with innovative school who are consistently one of the top independent schools in the county in the GCSE and A level league tables. More importantly, is that students leave the school having fulfilled more than they would have hoped for when they joined; both in the classroom and beyond it.

The school is looking for a well qualified History Teacher to work for at least one term, with the possibility of the position going on longer.

Set in the beautiful uplands of south Shropshire, bordering Herefordshire and Powys, the school is far from the distracting influences of urban life and yet it is within easy reach of all major travel links.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• To support the ethos of the school;
• You are expected to teach HIstory at GCSE and A-level (or BTEC if appropriate).
• To be responsible for the efficient and effective running of the department and all that that entails
• To attend INSET, Management and Faculty meetings as required.
• To be the Headmaster’s and Senior Management Team’s adviser on all issues relating to the subject.
• Maintain and develop department initiatives within School and the wider community, and being alert to new ideas that will enhance the educational experience of students in your department.

• Well qualified History/Humanities graduate (or equivalent) with QTS
• Gifted teacher
• Proven record of academic success

Recent findings…

Ofsted published a report in March 2011 called 'History for All'. The report concentrated on history in English schools 2007/10. There were some key findings, including:

  • In the schools visited history was generally a popular and successful subject, which many pupils enjoyed. Achievement was good or outstanding in 63 of the 83 primary schools and 59 of the 83 secondary schools visited.
  • History was successful in most of the secondary schools visited because it was well taught, notably in examination classes at GCSE and A level. The large majority of these history teachers were very well-qualified. In the large majority of the schools visited, the quality of the provision also reflected the strong leadership of the history departments.

The Role of a Supply History Teacher:

  • Teach all areas of the school curriculum or your subject specialism;
  • Organise the classroom and learning resources to create a positive teaching environment;
  • Plan, prepare and teach lessons that cater for all student ability ranges;
  • Motivate pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentation;
  • Maintain discipline;
  • Meet requirements for the assessment and recording of pupils' development;
  • Coordinate activities and resources within a specific area of the curriculum, supporting colleagues in the delivery of this specialist area;
  • Staying up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum;
  • Take part in school events and activities which may take place at weekends or in the evening;
  • Liaise with colleagues and working flexibly, particularly within smaller schools.
