Primary School Caretaker, Caerphilly

Job Description

New Directions Education are recruiting for School Caretakers, to cover temporary positions in Primary Schools in the Caerphilly area. The roles available are long and short-term temporary, covering internal staff absences such as sickness or maternity.

The working hours can vary depending on each schools’ specific requirements. Primary school caretakers will usually be required to work split-shifts, such as 7am – 11am and 3pm – 6pm.

School caretakers are also often required to work during school holidays. School caretakers are responsible for the overall upkeep, maintenance and security of the grounds and premises. Previous experience in maintenance, trades work, health and safety or construction work is essential.

Duties will include:

• Opening the school in the morning and locking up at the end of the day
• Ensuring the doors, gates and windows are locked when the building is not in use
• Carrying out daily checks of heating, boiler, and alarm systems
• Carrying out day to day maintenance and minor repairs throughout the school
• Organising external contracts for major work
• Cleaning duties such as emptying bins and litter picking
• Dealing with lettings, arranging chairs and tables for meetings, and clearing away afterwards

Essential experience for the role:

• An awareness of health, safety, security, and hygiene
• An excellent practical knowledge
• Previous experience in a maintenance, trades, or repairs position with transferable skills

Desirable experience for the role:

• Previous experience as a school caretaker
• Experience carrying out legionella testing.
