Job Description

We are recruiting for a hardworking and motivated School Caretaker, to work on a relief basis in Primary and Secondary schools in the Caerphilly area.

Due to the nature of relief work, all applicants must be flexible and reliable and willing to work in different schools in the area, covering long and short term temporary absences such as sickness and maternity.

The roles will be Monday – Friday, with some requirement to work during the school holidays. The working hours will vary depending on the specific school requiremets.

The successful candidate will be responsible for key-holding and overseeing all general maintenance and repairs on site, therefore all applicants must be hands-on and have excellent practical knowledge.

Job Specification

Caretakers are responsible for looking after a school site including the buildings and grounds.

The duties of a school Caretaker include:

  • General maintenance and minor repairs
  • Liaising with contractors
  • Managing heating and alarm systems
  • Security
  • Opening and closing the school
  • Basic cleaning
  • Key holding.

Caretakers must be honest, reliable and trustworthy. They must be able to work well on their own using their own initiative, as well as working within a larger team.

Candidates will ideally have previous caretaking experience; however New Directions will consider candidates who have a background in maintenance, decorating, facilities or security.

It’s mandatory that caretakers have a clear DBS either registered with the Update Service or a New Directions DBS.
