The new curriculum is currently in a consultation phase and will be developed further before being brought into action from September 2022. The goal of the new curriculum is to raise standards of education in Wales, reducing the attainment gap and implementing an education system that we are confident and proud of as a nation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do we need a new curriculum in Wales?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The national curriculum was first introduced in 1988 and since then, society has transformed with the introduction of new technology. Young people now require a different skill set &#8211; digital skills, adaptability and creativity &#8211; to thrive and be prepared for their futures. The new curriculum for Wales is designed to deliver against the changing requirements of today\u2019s society. It is being developed specifically for schools in Wales, using expertise, ideas and best practice from around the world to meet the demands of the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gary Williams from New Directions is optimistic about the new curriculum for Wales and the opportunities it might bring.&nbsp; He explains that \u201cNew Directions Education prides itself on providing up to date and relevant Continuing Professional Development for thousands of education workers. Therefore, we are looking forward to the introduction of the new curriculum and ensuring that all of our training programmes adapt to changing requirements and provide continuity for our workers and clients alike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n[vimeo 356127639 w=640 h=360]\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the new curriculum for Wales look like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Placing more focus on physical and mental wellbeing,\nalongside improvements in supporting children with additional learning needs, the\n<a href=\"https:\/\/hwb.gov.wales\/draft-curriculum-for-wales-2022\/a-guide-to-curriculum-for-wales-2022\/#the-four-purposes-of-the-curriculum\">four\npurposes of the new curriculum<\/a> are designed to develop children to become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>ambitious, capable learners<\/li><li>enterprising, creative contributors<\/li><li>ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world<\/li><li>and healthy, confident individuals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve these four purposes, the curriculum recommends moving\naway from defined traditional subjects taught in isolation and towards a more\nfluid approach to teaching. There are three proposed cross-curricular\nresponsibilities (literacy, numeracy and digital competence) which will be\nintertwined across six suggested Areas of Learning and Experience (AOLE). These\nsix areas will incorporate traditional subjects and provide a more holistic,\nflexible and creative approach to teaching. Young people will be encouraged to\nacquire knowledge, experiences and skills in each area, preparing to thrive as\nmembers of modern society. The 6 AOLEs include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Expressive Arts <\/li><li>Health and Wellbeing<\/li><li>Humanities<\/li><li>Languages, Literacy and Communication<\/li><li>Mathematics and Numeracy <\/li><li>Science and Technology<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do the Areas of Learning and Experience mean?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_157727576-small-450x540.jpg\" alt=\"new curriculum for Wales\" class=\"wp-image-94110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_157727576-small-450x540.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_157727576-small-768x921.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_157727576-small-600x720.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_157727576-small.jpg 982w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Expressive Arts\u2019<\/strong> includes subjects like Art, Dance, Drama, Film and Digital Media, and Music; developing creative, artistic and performance skills, while learning about culture and society. With opportunities for enriched learning experiences, such as visits to theatres or bringing external practitioners into the classroom, this area would help young people to appreciate creative talents, fostering critical thinking and enabling them to become <em>enterprising creative contributors<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Health and Wellbeing\u2019 <\/strong>offers holistic teaching\naround the physical, psychological, emotional and social aspects of our lives.\nIt aims to educate young people to develop and maintain their physical health,\nmental health, emotional wellbeing and positive relationships; while\nunderstanding the factors that affect them and empowering them to make positive\nchoices to become <em>healthy and confident individuals. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Humanities\u2019 <\/strong>involves studying past and present human experiences at local, national and global levels. It encourages contribution to the community and an understanding of cultural and ethnic diversity by contemplating different perspectives. Young people would learn about their heritage and how the people of Wales interrelate with the rest of the world, seeing their personal story as part of the wider picture, and engaging with issues such as sustainability and social change, to become <em>ethical, informed citizens<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Languages, Literacy and Communication\u2019 <\/strong>explores the\nlink between language and culture, with an emphasis on learning multiple languages.\nFocusing on Welsh, English and international languages and literature, learners\nwould develop knowledge and skills in listening and reading, speaking and\nwriting, enabling them to communicate efficiently. This AOLE would contribute\ntowards the <a href=\"https:\/\/hwb.gov.wales\/draft-curriculum-for-wales-2022\/a-guide-to-curriculum-for-wales-2022\/#the-four-purposes-of-the-curriculum\">Welsh\nGovernment ambition<\/a> of achieving one million Welsh speakers by 2050,\ncreating <em>informed citizens of Wales.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Mathematics and Numeracy\u2019 <\/strong>is to be taught in more engaging, exciting and accessible ways, while still being challenging for learners. It draws on real-life examples from the local, national and international environment to help make tangible connections between the concrete and the abstract. Learners are encouraged to be creative through play, experimentation, risk-taking and flexibility in tackling mathematical problems, to help them become <em>ambitious and capable learners.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Science and Technology\u2019 <\/strong>encompasses Biology, Chemistry,\nComputer Science, Design and Technology, and Physics. Emphasising the impact of\nscience and technology on learners\u2019 lives and the environment, this area focuses\non enhancing our understanding of the physical and digital worlds through prediction,\ntesting and questioning, and the development of theories and innovations to\nimprove our lives. Outdoor learning enhances the teaching experience,\nencouraging curiosity and the search for answers as <em>informed citizens.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this mean for New Directions?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_95571682-small-540x540.jpg\" alt=\"new curriculum\" class=\"wp-image-94109\" width=\"381\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_95571682-small-540x540.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_95571682-small-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_95571682-small-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_95571682-small-720x720.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/shutterstock_95571682-small.jpg 887w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At New Directions, we are embracing this suggested new\ncurriculum with six inspiring AOLEs and we are excited about being involved in\ntraining staff in the education sector to enable them to deliver the new\ncurriculum at the highest level in the future. We want to be involved in this\nnew aspirational curriculum and are working to develop an innovative suite of\ntraining programmes that are to be launched when the consultation period has ended\nand the new curriculum has been defined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are proud to already offer a range of courses that\ncomplement this proposed new curriculum, with over 2,000 places available for\nattendees each year.
