It has been an incredible academic year for us and the schools we\u2019ve worked with &#8211; we have achieved great things together! We now look forward to seeing what we can collectively accomplish in the 2019\/20 school year and there are many exciting things in store which we can\u2019t wait to share with you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training for School Children in 2018\/19<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2018\/19 academic year, ND Training delivered over 180\ntraining sessions for primary school children on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/2019\/10\/teaching-life-long-wellbeing-skills-to-the-next-generation\/\">British\nSign language and Life-Saving Sills<\/a>. We feel privileged to be in a position\nthat enables us to educate the next generation, equipping them with skills that\nwill benefit our communities as they grow into adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last school year, our experienced team of trainers\ntravelled around the country every week to attend over 130 different schools,\ndelivering training specifically designed for children, within the classroom\nenvironment. The British Sign Language (BSL) and Life-Saving Skills sessions\nare fun and highly interactive, allowing the children to fully participate in\nhands-on learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Training Attendance Map\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/376329816?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"768\" height=\"1000\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pupils from Bryncoch Church in Wales Primary School in Neath\nrecently participated in BSL and Life-Saving Skills training. The school\ncommented that \u201cboth workshops were excellent and thoroughly worthwhile due to\nthe nature of their content. The staff that delivered the workshops were\nfantastic and our pupils were engaged and enjoyed both sessions. We cannot\nrecommend these workshops enough!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BSL is an engaging session that teaches children about the\nbasics of using signs to communicate. The pupils learn the alphabet, numbers,\nquestion words, animals, colours and more, with the workshop ending in signing\nalong to \u201cI Can Sing a Rainbow\u201d and \u201cWhat a Wonderful World\u201d. It is a lesson\nthat is thoroughly enjoyed by primary school children and we are over the moon\nto announce that we taught BSL to an amazing 4,000 children in the last\nacademic year, giving them the skills to communicate with the deaf and hard of\nhearing within their schools and wider communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Life-Saving Skills training is also a hands-on lesson\nexploring basic first aid skills that empower children to assist in emergency\nsituations. They leave the lesson with the ability to manage common ailments and\ninjuries, including dealing with burns, bleeding and choking. In addition, the\nsession covers how to manage an unconscious casualty and deliver life-saving\nCPR. This is an incredibly important skill to teach young people and we are\nthrilled to have educated 8,000 young people in first aid and life-saving\nskills in the past academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training for Education Staff in 2018\/19<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside training children in primary schools across the\ncountry, we also carried out 90 training sessions for education staff in Wales\non a range of topics including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/2019\/10\/first-aid-training-for-staff-at-abercynon-primary-school\/\">First\nAid<\/a>, Behavioural Management, Safeguarding, Assessment for Learning, Team\nTeach, Mindfulness and more. This training is available to our candidates,\nenabling us to supply schools with the highest quality staff and offering our\ncandidates the opportunity to access Continuing Professional Development\nopportunities when working on a supply basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/Training_2019_Attendance_News_Story_Graphic_V03-01-1-720x720.jpg\" alt=\"ND training statistics 2018\/19\" class=\"wp-image-99556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/Training_2019_Attendance_News_Story_Graphic_V03-01-1-720x720.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/Training_2019_Attendance_News_Story_Graphic_V03-01-1-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/Training_2019_Attendance_News_Story_Graphic_V03-01-1-540x540.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/Training_2019_Attendance_News_Story_Graphic_V03-01-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.new-directions.co.uk\/education\/files\/Training_2019_Attendance_News_Story_Graphic_V03-01-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Team Teach &#8211; a programme based on managing challenging\nbehaviour through positive handling, de-escalation and risk management\ntechniques &#8211; was our most popular staff training course in the 2018\/19 academic\nyear, with around 600 education staff attending and benefitting from the\nprogramme. Team Teach is a valuable session that transforms the way staff can\npositively manage challenging behaviour in an education setting. It equips\nstaff with the practical tools to manage disruptive behaviour confidently and\ncompetently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other popular courses included First Aid, which was attended by over 300 education staff last year. Each of our training programmes are designed specifically for Teachers and School Support Staff to upskill in key areas that are prominent within the education sector. We ensure that all New Directions staff are equipped to deliver the best possible standard of education in Wales and our knowledgeable trainers strive to share their wealth of experience built up over 25 years of working in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exciting plans for 2019\/20<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on the success of the 2018\/19 school year, we look\nforward to continuing our journey and mission in the next academic year. We\nhave already got off to a great start and will be delivering new and innovative\ncourses based on the new curriculum for Wales this year, with a goal to engage\nwith another 3,000 members of education staff together with offering Continuing\nProfessional Development opportunities as part of our commitment to providing\nthe highest quality staff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ND Training also has ambitious goals to train 20,000 children in essential skills like BSL and first aid, while also introducing a crucial new mental health awareness programme for young people. This is a topic that is increasingly important, and it is an area of focus in the new curriculum for Wales, which we aim to support and compliment through our training. Alongside this, we plan to extend our reach further across the country, particularly in North Wales.
