Your role as an Accuracy Technician is key to making sure a pharmacy meets the highest standards of service.

What is an Accuracy Checking Technician?

As an Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT), you will be responsible for completing the final accuracy check on dispensed medications before they are supplied to the patient or customer.

You are the last person to see medicines or products before they are used by a patient or customer. This means you must be fully aware of the checking process, reporting and handling errors.

Accuracy Checking Technicians can be involved in any activity that provides a service to patients and customers. Working under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist, you may also be responsible for supervising and leading other pharmacy staff to deliver safe and effective patient care.

Your specialist role will provide a range of services, including:

  • Completing the final accuracy check on all dispensed medications
  • Supervising other members of staff in the pharmacy setting
  • Dispensing prescription medication and pharmaceutical products to patients
  • Preparing prescriptions by counting pills, labelling bottles and compounding medications
  • Carry out administrative duties and keeping detailed records
  • Gather, organise and assess patient information, including electronic patient record
  • Ensure compliance by monitoring the prescription-filing process
  • Engaging with patients and customers to answer their questions and offer advice
  • Liaising directly with healthcare providers and patients
  • Taking an inventory of drugs and place orders to maintain stock
  • Pricing medications, preparing billing information and completing patient sales and transactions for over-the-counter medications

Where and when can I work as an Accuracy Checking Technician?

We place Accuracy Checking Technicians to work in multiple settings. Whether it’s a local independent pharmacy in the community, NHS and private hospitals, high-street retail chain or a supermarket pharmacy – you have options and can see what suits you.

There are also opportunities in other pharmaceutical settings. For example, Accuracy Checking Technicians are also used in general practice, care homes, the Armed Forces, justice service and the pharmaceutical industry.

Exactly when you work can depend on the location and type of pharmacy you work in. Some pharmacies are open for extended hours, therefore shift work, long hours, weekend work and rotas may be involved. It’s important to consider these factors when looking for your next opportunity.

Who can be an Accuracy Checking Technician?

As a responsible recruitment provider, we carefully check your qualifications and training during the registration process to make sure you meet the regulatory requirements for Accuracy Checking Technicians. The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) requires all staff working in a pharmacy environment to be appropriately trained for the role they are carrying out.

To work as an Accuracy Checking Technician in England, Scotland or Wales, you need to complete both a knowledge qualification or course and a competence qualification. This can be achieved by undertaking GPhC-accredited course, GPhC-recognised qualifications or a GPhC-approved apprenticeship pathway. You must also be NVQ level 3 qualified and be registered with the GPhC.

The GPhC recognises several awarding bodies that deliver the required qualifications for Accuracy Checking Technicians. Find out more here.
