Social Care at Christmas

We are well into the swing of December at ND Social Care. Our Christmas decorations are up, the festive jumpers are out, and we are opening our advent calendars. But aside from all this, Christmas has a different meaning for many of us working in social care. For the vulnerable people we work with, Christmas is a difficult time of year. Children living in poverty or in care may not receive Christmas presents like their…

Winter Challenges in Social Care

Winter is a time of festivities and celebrations, but it isn’t always an easy time of year for all. When most of us are enjoying some time off at Christmas with our families, Care Workers are working hard to provide vital support to those they care for, even if that means being away from their own families. Meanwhile, winter can also be a time of struggle for some of our service users at ND Social…

Local Hero – Rachel is an Ambassador for the Welsh Blood Service

Rachel Jones, Ambassador for the Welsh Blood Service

Many members of the New Directions family go above and beyond to give something back to their local community, which is why we feel the need to celebrate our Local Heroes. This month, we are shining the spotlight on our Receptionist, Rachel Jones, who first began working with New Directions in December 2015. Rachel took a brief career break to do charity work in Nepal before coming back to us in July 2019, and we…

Looking after your mental wellbeing – World Mental Health Day

10th October is World Mental Health Day – a global recognition day aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues, offering education and support, and encouraging us to talk more openly about our mental health. Although mental health issues can present themselves on any day of the year, this is a day when you can show your support to others and remind yourself to take care of your own mental wellbeing too. Mental health statistics…

Caring for someone with dementia

Many of us know of someone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, whether that’s a friend, neighbour, family member, or through our field of work. Globally, the number of people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia is on the rise, which means more of us are caring for someone with dementia. It’s estimated that figures will rise from 50 million cases around the world in 2018 to a staggering 152 million in 2050 putting…

Local Hero – Omar Volunteers for Matt’s Cafe

Omar - our local hero

As you already know, the ND Social Care team are hugely passionate about giving something back to the local community, not just through their everyday work, but by giving up their own time outside of work too. It’s no wonder they won the New Directions ‘Community Value’ award earlier this year! This month, we want to shine the spotlight on our Local Hero, Omar, from the ND Social Care Swansea branch, who has recently taken…

Our Swansea team helping the homeless this Christmas

This week, Omar and Samantha from our Swansea branch have been helping out at The Swansea Homeless Sanctuary, a homeless drop in centre, hosting their Christmas lunch which provides over 60 homeless people with a warm cooked meal. There were many great organisations and charities pitching in to pull off this day for the homeless. Omar and Sam delivered warm clothes donated by friends, family and work colleagues, which were gratefully received by the centre.…
