Local Hero – Omar Volunteers for Matt’s Cafe

Omar - our local hero

As you already know, the ND Social Care team are hugely passionate about giving something back to the local community, not just through their everyday work, but by giving up their own time outside of work too. It’s no wonder they won the New Directions ‘Community Value’ award earlier this year! This month, we want to shine the spotlight on our Local Hero, Omar, from the ND Social Care Swansea branch, who has recently taken…

Our Swansea team helping the homeless this Christmas

This week, Omar and Samantha from our Swansea branch have been helping out at The Swansea Homeless Sanctuary, a homeless drop in centre, hosting their Christmas lunch which provides over 60 homeless people with a warm cooked meal. There were many great organisations and charities pitching in to pull off this day for the homeless. Omar and Sam delivered warm clothes donated by friends, family and work colleagues, which were gratefully received by the centre.…

Learn to love yourself!

I wanted to write this blog about Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) as it strikes a personal chord with me. As I get older I seem to be more self-conscious and less happy with the way I look; this may have something to do with the fact that my once slender size 8 figure has turned somewhat curvier over the years to a full size 12 and as much as I try to blame the clothes…

Here in the UK most people use British Sign Language (BSL) which is not simply the English language with hand signs, it has its own grammar and sentence construction. So, whist we would say “what is your name?” in BSL it would be signed “Your name, what?” Deafness is the third…

Social Care to Stop – Snow Way!

Image of New Directions Social Care Team on Snow Day 2018

Last week our social care teams across Cardiff, Bristol and Swansea were hit with what some would consider to be a major problem – snow, and lots of it. #StormEmma hit our regions with gusto, but there was snow way we were going to be beaten in providing a social care service to our community. At midday on Thursday 2nd March 2018 our management team made the decision to close our office spaces to ensure…

Children’s Mental Health Week 2018

Children’s Mental Health week ran from 5 – 11th February this year, with the theme “Being Ourselves” which is championed by children’s charity, Place2be. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, who has been the Royal Patron of Place2be since 2013, launched children’s mental health week with a thought provoking video message. "Our experience of the world at this early stage helps to shape who we become as adults, how we begin to feel comfortable in…
