1:1 Teaching Assistant – Specialist SEND School (Wirral)

New Directions is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Male Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a pupil within an exceptional specialist SEND school in Wirral, supporting learners aged 9–16 (Key Stage 2–4).

Due to the individual pupil’s specific learning needs and history of trauma, this role is only suitable for male applicants. The appointment will be made in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, as the requirement constitutes a genuine occupational requirement.

This unique provision supports pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) across all four broad areas of need, as well as pupils undergoing Local Authority assessment. The school is committed to unlocking every child’s potential, regardless of their starting point.

As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to provide consistent, relational, and trauma-informed support tailored specifically to one pupil. You will play a vital role in supporting learning, emotional regulation, social development, and engagement in education.

This role is ideal for someone patient, resilient, nurturing, and confident in building strong, professional boundaries while fostering trust and safety.

About the School

This specialist provision is widely recognised for its nurturing, personalised, and inclusive approach. The school offers three distinct pathways tailored to individual needs and aspirations.

The site includes 18 classrooms, 11 specialist Nurture Bases, a Science Lab, Art room, Food Technology suite, and Engineering workshop. The curriculum is flexible, creative, and highly individualised.

A strong trauma-informed approach underpins all practice. Staff work collaboratively to ensure pupils feel safe, understood, and valued from the moment they arrive.

The Role Will Include:

• Providing dedicated 1:1 classroom and pastoral support
• Supporting engagement across a range of subjects
• Assisting with emotional regulation and social development
• Implementing personalised education and behaviour support plans
• Using positive, relational behaviour approaches
• Working closely with teachers, SENDCo, and pastoral teams
• Supporting transitions throughout the school day

• Supportive, collaborative staff culture
• Highly rewarding role with visible impact
• Structured school hours promoting work–life balance

Who We’re Looking For:
