Job Description

New Directions are seeking a friendly, patient, and resilient 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support pupils in KS2 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and presents challenging behaviour at a partner primary school in Manchester. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in a child’s school experience within a supportive and welcoming team.

This role would suit someone with experience in schools or SEN settings, as well as individuals as well as those new to education who have a background in care or support work and are eager to transfer their skills into supporting children in school.

This position is due to start in May 2026 and could continue for the remainder of the academic year, with the potential to become a permanent role for the right candidate.

The Role

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support pupils in KS2 with ASC
  • Support the pupil’s learning, emotional regulation, and engagement in lessons
  • Implement strategies to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to follow tailored support plans
  • Help create a structured, safe, and positive learning environment
  • Encourage social interaction and independence where appropriate

The Candidate

  • Has a calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Enjoys working with children and supporting those with additional needs
  • Has strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Has experience with ASC and/or challenging behaviour (desirable but not essential)
  • Holds, or is working towards, a relevant qualification (e.g. Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant Qualification, Psychology, SEN, or Speech and Language) is desirable
  • Is reliable, flexible, and committed to making a positive impact
