New Directions Education is seeking compassionate, dedicated, and experienced PMLD Teaching Assistants to work within specialist provisions and SEND schools across Leeds.
This is a highly rewarding role supporting children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), helping them access education, develop communication skills, build independence, and achieve meaningful outcomes in a safe and nurturing environment.

About the Role
As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to provide tailored support for pupils with a wide range of complex learning and physical disabilities.
No two days are the same, and your role will be vital in ensuring each pupil can engage in learning activities and reach their full potential.


Your responsibilities will include:
-Providing one-to-one and small group support for pupils with PMLD.
-Supporting pupils with complex communication, sensory, physical, and medical needs.
-Assisting with personalised learning activities designed around individual EHCP targets.
-Supporting pupils with sensory-based learning approaches and interactive activities.
-Working alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and teaching staff.
-Encouraging communication through a range of methods including PECS, Makaton, communication boards, and assistive technologies.
-Promoting independence, self-confidence, and social development.
-Supporting pupils during lessons, therapy sessions, hydrotherapy, and enrichment activities where required.
-Assisting with behaviour support strategies in line with individual learning plans.
-Monitoring and recording pupil progress and achievements.
-Providing personal care where required, including toileting, feeding, changing, and moving and handling support.
-Ensuring the safety, wellbeing, dignity, and welfare of all pupils at all times.

The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for individuals who are patient, caring, resilient, and committed to supporting children with additional needs.
To be successful in this role, you should have:
– Previous experience working with children or young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
– Experience supporting individuals with PMLD, SLD, ASD, Complex Needs, Physical Disabilities, or Medical Needs is highly desirable
– A strong understanding of person-centred support and inclusive education
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
– The ability to remain calm, positive, and professional in challenging situations
– Experience providing personal care or a willingness to undertake personal care responsibilities
– A flexible and adaptable approach to working with pupils with varying needs
– A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
