New Directions are seeking a 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a KS2 pupil in a primary school in M21. The pupil has autism and is non-verbal, so the school is looking for someone with previous experience supporting children with autism and non-verbal communication needs.
This is a full-time role starting ASAP and continuing for the remainder of the academic year.
The Role
Providing dedicated 1:1 support to a KS2 pupil throughout the school day.
Supporting the pupil to access and engage with the curriculum.
Using appropriate strategies and communication methods to support a non-verbal pupil.
Supporting the pupil with communication, social interaction and emotional regulation.
Helping the pupil develop independence and confidence.
Supporting positive behaviour and managing any challenges calmly and consistently.
Adapting activities and learning to meet the pupil’s individual needs.
Supporting the pupil during lessons, break times and other school activities.
Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team.
Following the pupil’s individual support plans and agreed strategies.
Creating a safe, structured and supportive environment.
The Candidate
Previous experience working with children is essential.
Experience supporting children with autism is essential.
Experience supporting non-verbal children is essential.
Previous 1:1 experience within a school setting is highly desirable.
Experience using alternative or non-verbal communication methods would be beneficial.
Understanding of sensory needs, communication difficulties and emotional regulation.
Patient, consistent and able to build a strong relationship with the pupil.
Confident managing challenging situations and supporting positive behaviour.
Able to adapt their approach to meet the individual needs of the pupil.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
A good understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.
Available to start ASAP and commit to the remainder of the academic year.
