Job Purpose

We are currently looking for an experienced, patient and enthusiastic Autism Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within a specialist resource base attached to a mainstream primary school in Handsworth.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who already has experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs and would like to develop their career within SEND education.

You will support pupils who require additional help with communication, social interaction, learning, emotional regulation and daily routines. You will also help pupils access appropriate mainstream classroom activities, encouraging greater confidence and independence.

The successful candidate will be someone who understands the importance of consistency, patience and building positive relationships with pupils.

For the right candidate, this role offers genuine long-term potential. Following a successful placement, there may be an opportunity to apply for a permanent position directly with the school, subject to the school’s recruitment process and the required transfer period.

Key Responsibilities – Teaching & Learning Support

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with ASD
  • Support pupils within the specialist resource base and mainstream classrooms
  • Assist with communication, interaction and social development
  • Support individual education plans and targeted interventions
  • Use visual timetables, structured routines and appropriate communication strategies
  • Support pupils with transitions and changes throughout the school day
  • Encourage independence, confidence and positive engagement
  • Support emotional regulation and sensory needs where required
  • Work closely with teachers, SEND staff and other professionals
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide appropriate feedback
  • Maintain a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment

Person Requirements

Previous relevant experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs is essential.

Relevant experience may include:

  • Good understanding of professional boundaries
  • Reliability and consistency
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Two satisfactory references

Qualifications

No formal Teaching Assistant qualification required.

Relevant practical experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs is essential.
