The Cover Supervisor is responsible for supervising students and delivering pre-prepared work during the absence of the class teacher. This role plays a vital part in maintaining continuity of learning, ensuring that students remain focused, engaged, and productive in the classroom despite the absence of their regular teacher.
The postholder will be expected to manage classroom behavior effectively, follow the school’s policies, and create a calm and orderly environment conducive to learning. A key part of the role is to deliver the lesson content that has been set by the absent teacher, ensuring students understand the instructions and are supported in completing their work to the best of their ability.
Job Specification
Working as a Cover Supervisor can be a very rewarding but very demanding role. Schools may wish to employ staff for cover supervision but on occasions where they are not needed for cover, they might also be released to provide additional support to Teachers in classrooms, or to carry out administrative tasks.
Ideally, candidates will be required to:
Develop curricular knowledge in line with the school requirements
Apply the school’s behaviour management policy and report any difficulties to the class Teacher/senior leadership team
Set homework in line with the classroom Teacher requirements
Provide homework under the guidance of the class Teacher
Administer class tests if requested
Supervise the work of the Teaching Assistant, providing support if required
Abide by and work towards all policies within the school, eg – behaviour management, health and safety, equal opportunities
Carry out pre-prepared exercises in the short term absence of the class Teacher
Ensure students remain on task through classroom management
You will not be required to plan lessons, but will have the opportunity to lead the class
Assisting students where required and ensuring lessons are delivered
Collect completed work and pass to the class teacher.
