Contract Type Full-time, Monday to Friday Term-time only Long-term opportunity with the potential to become a permanent member of school staff following a successful placement and the required transfer period.
Pay £115 – £150 per day £575 – £750 per week Weekly pay Pay dependent on the responsibilities of the role and the successful candidate’s relevant experience.
Job Purpose
We are currently looking for an experienced, confident and compassionate Pastoral Lead to support pupils within a specialist SEND resource base attached to a mainstream secondary school in North Birmingham.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong pastoral, SEND or children’s support experience who is ready to take on additional responsibility. You will play an important role in supporting pupils with wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, engagement and barriers to learning, while helping to ensure they receive consistent support throughout their school day.
Working closely with the Resource Base Lead, SENCO, teaching and pastoral teams, you will deliver targeted interventions, provide 1:1 support and build positive relationships with pupils, families and professionals.
For the right candidate, this role offers genuine long-term potential. Following a successful placement, there may be an opportunity to apply for a permanent position directly with the school, subject to the school’s recruitment process and the required transfer period.
Key Responsibilities – Pastoral & SEND Support
Lead day-to-day pastoral support for pupils within the SEND resource base
Deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions
Provide consistent pastoral support for identified pupils
Support pupils with behaviour, emotional regulation, attendance and engagement
Identify barriers to learning and help put appropriate support strategies in place
Build positive and professional relationships with pupils
Support pupils following incidents or periods of dysregulation and help them successfully return to learning
Monitor pupil progress and maintain accurate intervention and pastoral records
Promote positive attendance, punctuality, behaviour and engagement
Liaise with parents and carers regarding pupil support and progress
Work closely with the Resource Base Lead, SENCO, teachers and wider pastoral team
Contribute to individual pupil support plans, reviews and interventions
Liaise with external professionals and agencies where appropriate
Support safeguarding, pupil wellbeing and a positive culture within the resource base
Help provide consistency and guidance to staff supporting identified pupils
Contribute to the continued development of pastoral provision within the resource base
Person Requirements
Previous relevant experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs is essential.
Relevant experience can include:

Learning or behaviour mentoring

Social work
Family support
Children’s social care
Residential care or support
Alternative provision
Other relevant roles supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs
Applicants should also have:
Experience delivering 1:1 support or targeted interventions
Strong understanding of pastoral support and barriers to learning
Confidence supporting pupils with SEND and additional needs
Strong relationship-building and communication skills
Ability to work positively with parents and carers
Calm, consistent and solution-focused approach
Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries
Good organisational and record-keeping skills
Ability to work effectively with teaching, pastoral and SEND professionals
Good understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
Two satisfactory professional references
Qualifications
No formal teaching qualification is required.
Relevant qualifications in areas such as Education, SEND, Youth Work, Social Work, Health & Social Care, Children and Young People’s Services, Counselling or Pastoral Support would be advantageous.
Substantial relevant experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs is essential.
