New Directions Education is recruiting resilient, empathetic Behaviour Support Workers to work within specialist SEMH provisions and alternative settings across the Leeds area.
The Role
This is a rewarding opportunity to support pupils who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education. You will work in SEMH schools, alternative provisions, and pupil referral units (PRUs), helping students develop positive behaviours, build resilience, and re-engage with learning.
Key Responsibilities
Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs
Support pupils who may display: Challenging behaviour
Emotional dysregulation
Trauma-related responses
Implement behaviour support plans and intervention strategies
Promote positive behaviour, self-regulation, and social skills
Build strong, consistent relationships to create trust and stability
Support students both in lessons and during unstructured times (e.g. breaks)
Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals
What We’re Looking For
Experience working with children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs (schools, youth work, care, or similar)
A calm, patient, and resilient approach
Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
Ability to remain professional in challenging situations
Confidence working in specialist or alternative settings
A passion for supporting young people who need additional guidance and structure
Relevant training such as Team Teach, de-escalation techniques, or Youth Work qualifications is highly desirable.
