Job Purpose
The Special Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) will support the learning, wellbeing, and development of young children with a lead diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated needs. A reception class in a SEND school can be very active and the children’s needs can be very complex; this is due to the limited access to the correct interventions and environment whilst at nursery and/or at home. The beginning of the academic year in reception is all about putting in place interventions for communication and attention and building on from those foundations. some children may display behaviour that challenges as well need support with toilet training due to delayed social, emotional and communication development.


Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning Support
Support pupils aged 4–5 years with a lead diagnosis of Autism, including those with:
– Behaviour that challenges and delayed toilet training needs
– Sensory processing difficulties
– Emotional dysregulation
– Non‑verbal or Pre-verbal communication needs
Deliver targeted 1:1 and small‑group support under the direction of the class teacher
Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), EHCP outcomes, and personalised learning programs
Support pupils to engage with learning activities using structured approaches (e.g. visual supports, clear routines)

 
Person Requirements
– Experience of working with young children with Autism and/or additional needs
– Understanding of sensory processing, emotional regulation, and behaviour that challenges
– Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent in demanding situations
– Strong communication and teamwork skills
– Commitment to inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
– Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or we can put one in place for you)
– Two satisfactory references covering a minimum of 12 months
