New Directions Education is seeking compassionate, resilient, and proactive SEMH Teaching Assistants to work within specialist provisions and schools across the Leeds area.
This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning, develop positive relationships, and achieve success both inside and outside the classroom.
We are particularly interested in candidates seeking full-time roles, but part-time applicants will also be considered.
The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:
Support pupils with SEMH needs, challenging behaviours, and additional learning requirements.
Build positive and trusting relationships with young people who may have experienced difficulties in education.
Provide one-to-one and small group support both in and out of the classroom.
Help pupils develop emotional regulation, social skills, and self-confidence.
Support teachers in delivering engaging and accessible learning activities.
Implement behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques where required.
Encourage attendance, engagement, and participation in learning.
Act as a positive role model, promoting resilience, independence, and personal growth.

The ideal candidate will have:
– Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour. – Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. – A calm, patient, and empathetic approach. – The resilience and confidence to manage challenging situations effectively. – A genuine passion for helping young people achieve their potential.
