New Directions Education is proud to be working in partnership with a caring and inclusive school in Birkenhead to recruit a dedicated and compassionate 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a secondary-aged pupil with a stoma.
This is a highly rewarding role that requires sensitivity, professionalism, and a nurturing approach. You will play a key part in ensuring the pupil’s medical needs are carefully managed throughout the school day, including supporting with stoma care routines, maintaining strict hygiene and infection control procedures, and monitoring for any changes in the pupil’s comfort or health.
In addition to providing medical support, you will also help the child to fully engage in learning and social activities, promoting their confidence, independence, and inclusion within the classroom. Working closely with the class teacher, SENCo, parents, and healthcare professionals, you will ensure that both the pupil’s educational progress and personal well-being are at the heart of everything you do.
This position offers an opportunity to make a genuine difference in a child’s life — supporting not only their academic achievement but also their emotional development and daily care needs in a safe and supportive environment.
About the Role:
Provide personalised care and supervision for a pupil with a stoma, following individual healthcare and care plans.
Support with stoma management, ensuring all procedures are carried out safely, discreetly, and in line with medical advice.
Monitor the stoma site for any signs of discomfort or infection and follow clear reporting and hygiene protocols.
Maintain rigorous infection control and ensure a clean, safe learning environment.
Provide reassurance and emotional support, helping the child to feel secure and confident at school.
Support the pupil’s academic learning, adapting resources and assisting with lessons under the guidance of the class teacher.
Collaborate with staff, families, and health professionals to maintain consistent care and communication.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Previous experience in a school-based, SEN, or healthcare setting.
Knowledge or experience of stoma care and infection control procedures (training can be provided for the right candidate).
A calm, caring, and professional manner, with sensitivity to personal care needs.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with teachers, families, and external professionals.
Relevant qualifications such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Health & Social Care, or First Aid are desirable.
What We Offer:
Competitive pay rates through New Directions Education.
Ongoing professional development and opportunities for medical care training.
A supportive and welcoming school environment.
The chance to make a real impact by supporting a child’s health, confidence, and academic success.
If you are a caring, reliable, and proactive individual who can provide both medical and educational support, we would love to hear from you.
