New Directions Education is recruiting for a Post-16 SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist provision in Leeds, supporting students aged 16-19 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is a highly rewarding role for someone who is committed to making a genuine difference in the lives of young people, helping them overcome challenges, achieve qualifications and develop the skills needed for independence, employment and further education.

The Role

As a Post-16 SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students both inside and outside the classroom. Every day will be different, requiring patience, adaptability and a positive approach to supporting young people with diverse needs.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing tailored support to students with SEMH needs on a 1:1 and small group basis
• Supporting learners to engage positively with education and vocational learning programmes
• Assisting teachers in delivering engaging lessons and practical activities
• Building trusting relationships that help students develop confidence and self-esteem
• Supporting students with emotional regulation, social interaction and behaviour management
• Encouraging independence, personal development and life skills
• Helping learners work towards educational, social and personal targets
• Promoting positive behaviour and creating a safe, supportive learning environment
• Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, parents and external agencies to support student progress

What We’re Looking For

– Previous experience supporting young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional learning needs

– Experience working within a school, college, alternative provision, youth work, care or support setting

– Strong relationship-building and communication skills

– The ability to remain calm, patient and resilient in challenging situations

– A proactive and positive attitude towards supporting student development

– A genuine passion for helping young people achieve successful outcomes
