Job Description

New Directions Education is seeking dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistants to support pupils across primary and secondary provisions in the Wakefield area for a range of roles starting ASAP and into the new academic year.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and reach their full potential.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting pupils who may struggle with emotional regulation, behaviour, or engagement with learning. You will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to provide both academic and emotional support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
  • Building positive, trusting relationships to help pupils feel safe, supported, and understood
  • Supporting pupils in managing emotions, behaviour, and social interactions
  • Assisting in the delivery of tailored learning activities, adapted to meet individual needs
  • Promoting positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques in line with school policies
  • Encouraging engagement in lessons and developing pupils’ confidence and self-esteem
  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviours, using calm and consistent approaches
  • Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to support pupil progress
  • Assisting with the implementation of EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) where required
  • Supporting pupils during transitions, break times, and less structured parts of the school day

This role requires patience, empathy, and consistency, and is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting vulnerable learners.

You may work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Mainstream schools with specialist SEMH provisions
  • Alternative provisions
  • Specialist settings designed to support pupils with complex needs

  • Are proactive, adaptable, and able to think on their feet
  • Have a genuine passion for supporting and inspiring young people
