New Directions Education is seeking dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistants to support pupils across primary and secondary provisions in the Wakefield area for a range of roles starting ASAP and into the new academic year.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting pupils who may struggle with emotional regulation, behaviour, or engagement with learning. You will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to provide both academic and emotional support.
Your responsibilities will include:
Providing 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
Building positive, trusting relationships to help pupils feel safe, supported, and understood
Supporting pupils in managing emotions, behaviour, and social interactions
Assisting in the delivery of tailored learning activities, adapted to meet individual needs
Promoting positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques in line with school policies
Encouraging engagement in lessons and developing pupils’ confidence and self-esteem
Supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviours, using calm and consistent approaches
Working alongside teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to support pupil progress
Assisting with the implementation of EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) where required
Supporting pupils during transitions, break times, and less structured parts of the school day
This role requires patience, empathy, and consistency, and is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting vulnerable learners.

Have experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEN, or behavioural needs
Are calm, patient, and resilient under pressure
Have strong interpersonal and communication skills
Can build rapport and maintain professional boundaries
Are proactive, adaptable, and able to think on their feet
Have a genuine passion for supporting and inspiring young people
Backgrounds in education, youth work, care, psychology, or support work are highly desirable
