New Directions Education is currently recruiting confident and adaptable Cover Supervisors to work within SEN (Special Educational Needs) settings across the Leeds area. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting young people with additional needs while gaining valuable classroom experience.
About the Role
As an SEN Cover Supervisor, you will step into the classroom in the absence of the teacher to ensure continuity of learning and maintain a structured, positive environment. Working with pupils who have a range of additional needs, you will play a key role in supporting both their education and emotional wellbeing.
Your responsibilities will include:
-Supervising classes and delivering pre-set work to pupils with SEND
-Managing classroom behaviour using consistent and positive strategies
-Supporting pupils with a range of needs, including ASD, ADHD, learning difficulties, and SEMH needs
-Providing guidance and reassurance to help pupils stay focused and engaged
-Working closely with teaching assistants and support staff to meet individual needs
-Adapting your approach to suit different learning styles and behavioural needs
-Using de-escalation techniques where necessary to manage challenging behaviour
-Encouraging pupils’ confidence, independence, and participation
-Maintaining a safe, calm, and inclusive classroom environment
-Providing feedback to teaching staff on pupil progress and behaviour
This role is ideal for individuals who are confident leading a classroom but also have the patience, empathy, and resilience needed to support pupils with additional needs.
The Settings
You may be placed in a variety of specialist SEN environments, including:
SEN schools supporting a range of complex needs
Alternative provisions
Mainstream schools with dedicated SEN units or resource bases
These settings are focused on inclusion, support, and personalised learning.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for candidates who:
-Have experience working with young people, ideally in SEN, SEMH, or behaviour-focused roles
-Are confident managing a classroom and leading learning activities
-Have strong behaviour management and communication skills
-Are calm, patient, and resilient under pressure
-Can build positive relationships with pupils and staff
-Are adaptable and able to respond to a range of situations
Backgrounds in education, youth work, coaching, support work, or care are highly desirable.
