The Role
As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists, medical staff and other support professionals to deliver tailored support that enables pupils to participate fully in school life.
Your responsibilities will include:
– Providing 1:1 and small group support to pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties
– Assisting with the delivery of personalised learning programmes tailored to individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
– Supporting pupils with sensory-based learning activities, communication development and engagement in lessons
– Using a range of communication methods, including Makaton, PECS, visual aids and sensory approaches where required
– Supporting pupils with physical and mobility needs, including transferring and positioning where appropriate training has been provided
– Assisting with feeding programmes, personal care and medical needs in line with school policies
– Helping pupils develop independence, social interaction and life skills
– Working alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists to support individual development goals
– Monitoring progress and providing feedback to teaching staff
– Creating a safe, positive and nurturing environment where pupils can thrive
– Supporting pupils during enrichment activities, sensory sessions, hydrotherapy, outdoor learning and educational visits
What We’re Looking For
Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND is essential.
Experience in any of the following areas would be particularly beneficial:
PMLD
Complex needs
Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Physical disabilities
Medical needs
Special school environments
Care or support work with vulnerable children and young people
You will also possess:
A calm, caring and patient approach
Strong communication and teamwork skills
The ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff
A proactive and adaptable attitude
Confidence supporting pupils with personal care requirements
A genuine passion for SEND education
An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
