New Directions are seeking a resilient and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Manchester. This is a full-time role starting in September 2026 for the Autumn Term initially, with the potential for the position to be extended.
The successful candidate will support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs who may have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), disrupted education or exclusion from mainstream settings. Many pupils display behaviours that challenge, so we are looking for someone who can build positive relationships, remain calm under pressure and provide consistent, nurturing support to help pupils re-engage with learning
The Role
• Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour
• Build positive, trusting relationships to support pupils’ emotional regulation and engagement in learning
• Implement behaviour support plans and use positive behaviour management strategies to de-escalate challenging situations
• Support pupils with their academic, social and emotional development both inside and outside the classroom
• Work closely with teachers, pastoral teams and external professionals to meet individual pupil needs
• Encourage resilience, confidence and independence while helping pupils overcome barriers to learning
• Help create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment where pupils can thrive
The Candidate
• Previous experience working with children or young people with challenging behaviour is essential
• Experience within residential care, children’s care homes, youth work, secure settings, alternative provision, PRUs or SEMH schools is highly desirable
• A calm, patient and resilient approach with the ability to manage challenging situations confidently
• A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and young people from trauma-informed backgrounds
• Team Teach training is desirable but not essential
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
