A special needs school is looking for a teaching assistant to work in their 6th form based within a mainstream college which is local to the main school site. The 6th form supports individuals with a lead diagnosis of Autism, with some individuals also having other additional needs such as Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) or health needs.
Whilst the main focus of the 6th form is to continue the learner’s education they also put a strong emphasis on preparation for life after schooling, such as lots of trips out to shops and other local facilities and amenities to gain life skills. With this in mind, applicants should be prepared to take on a role with quite active days but also have a good level of Maths and English skills (GCSE Grace C/4 or equivalent).
Key Responsibilities
– Supporting 6th Form age students (16-91 years) with a lead diagnosis of Autism, with some individuals also having other additional needs such as Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) or health needs
– Working on a 1 to 1 and/or small group basis, following the timetable and planning provided by the teacher, ensuring proper engagement with all activities
– Supporting during lessons, ensuring high educational expectations
– Health and safety whilst out and about on trips
– Providing feedback to learners and teachers
Person Requirements
– Experience in supporting young people with a lead diagnosis of Autism, with some individuals also having other additional needs such as Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) or health needs
– Grade C/4 or above in Maths and English (or equivalent)
– Strong communication and teamwork skills
– Strong understanding of health and safety requirements for trips out
– Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or we can put one in place for you)
– Two satisfactory references covering a minimum of two years
