Friday the 31st January saw the launch of the Premier League schools tournament in South Wales at the House of Sport in Cardiff. The tournament is being  held in conjunction with Cardiff City Football club and New Directions Education and will feature schools across South Wales.

The mixed competition this year is being run as part of the Premier League Schools Tournament after Cardiff City’s stunning promotion to the Premier League last season. The winner of the tournament goes forward to compete for a place in a UK national final which will be played at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Rogerstone Primary the 2013 winners of the tournament will be returning to defend their title.  Steve Lewis year six teacher from Rogerstone Primary commented “It is definitely a proud feeling that we have, to hand back the Trophy as 2013 Tournament winners.  However, we do feel a sense of anticipation and expectation this year. The boys are eager to experience the Cardiff City Academy training facility as last year’s team couldn’t stop talking about their Trophy run.”

Friday saw the first teams battle it out to reach the next stages with Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd, Langstone Primary School, Gwauncelyn Primary School, YGG Sant Baruc,Evenlode Primary School, Penygawsi Primary School, St Bernadette’s Catholic School and Trowbridge Primary School taking part.

Each school played extremely well however  Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd and Evenlode Primary School went through to the next stage. the next group stage will be held on the 6th and 7th of February 2014.

Congratulations to both teams for getting through and a big well done for all the teams that took part.
