New Directions Education are currently recruiting for Cover Supervisors to work in various Secondary Schools throughout Cardiff. The position will involve providing general cover across schools, covering day-to-day staff absences and training courses.
As a Cover Supervisor, you will be expected to supervise pupils whilst they carry out work that has been pre-prepared by a teacher, manage pupil behaviour whilst they are undertaking this work, deal with any immediate issues that arise, and follow the school’s policies and procedures.
The days are flexible depending on each school’s requirements, and we offer both day-to-day supply opportunities and long-term placements, many of which can lead to permanent contracts. This role provides valuable classroom experience and the opportunity to progress towards teacher training through New Directions Education. Alternatively, you may be a qualified teacher looking for temporary work that does not require planning, marking or assessment responsibilities.
You must have a proven track record of managing or leading groups that can be transferred into a classroom environment. Specifically, your experience should include leading groups of 10+ individuals, whether through working with children, youth groups, sports teams, community organisations, adults with learning difficulties, or similar settings.
Working as a Cover Supervisor can be a highly rewarding yet demanding role. Schools may employ Cover Supervisors for classroom cover but, when cover is not required, you may also be asked to support teachers in lessons or assist with administrative tasks.
Ideally, candidates will be able to:
• Develop curriculum knowledge in line with school requirements
• Apply the school’s behaviour management policy and report any concerns to the class teacher or senior leadership team
• Set and monitor homework in line with teacher requirements
• Support learning activities under the guidance of teaching staff
• Administer class tests when required
• Work alongside Teaching Assistants and provide support where necessary
• Adhere to all school policies, including behaviour management, safeguarding, health and safety, and equal opportunities
• Deliver pre-prepared work during the short-term absence of the class teacher
• Ensure students remain engaged and on task through effective classroom management
• Lead lessons confidently without the need for lesson planning responsibilities
• Support students with their learning and ensure lessons run smoothly
• Collect and return completed work to the class teacher
