New Directions Education is seeking passionate, resilient, and dedicated Behaviour Support Workers to work within SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) provisions across Wakefield.

The Role

As a Behaviour Support Worker, you will:

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, and additional learning needs.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
  • Help pupils regulate emotions and develop coping strategies.
  • Support learning both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Implement behaviour management and intervention strategies.
  • Encourage engagement, attendance, and participation in education.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals.
  • Act as a positive role model, promoting self-esteem, resilience, and personal growth.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals with experience in:

  • Behaviour support or pastoral roles.
  • Residential childcare.
  • Youth work and mentoring.
  • Sports coaching.
  • Care and support work.
  • SEND and alternative provision settings.
  • Armed forces, probation, or community support backgrounds.

You will ideally have:

– Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour or SEMH needs.
– Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
– A calm, patient and empathetic approach.
– Resilience and confidence in managing difficult situations.
– A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
