Job Description

New Directions Education are currently recruiting Cover Supervisors to work across a range of secondary schools throughout Monmouthshire.

This role involves providing general classroom cover for day-to-day teacher absences and training courses. As a Cover Supervisor, you will supervise students as they complete pre-prepared work, maintain a positive learning environment, manage classroom behaviour, and ensure that school policies and procedures are followed at all times.

We offer flexible working opportunities to suit both your availability and the needs of our partner schools. Assignments range from day-to-day cover to long-term placements, many of which can lead to permanent positions.

This role provides valuable classroom experience for individuals considering a future career in teaching and offers a pathway into teacher training through New Directions Education. It is also ideal for qualified teachers seeking temporary work without the additional responsibilities of planning, marking, and assessment.

Requirements

Applicants must have previous experience of managing or leading groups of 10 or more people in a setting that can be transferred into a classroom environment. This may include:

  • Working with children or young people
  • Youth work
  • Coaching or mentoring
  • Managing groups of adults
  • Supporting individuals with learning difficulties or additional needs

Job Specification

Working as a Cover Supervisor can be both highly rewarding and challenging. In addition to classroom cover, schools may occasionally require Cover Supervisors to support teachers within lessons or assist with administrative tasks when cover is not required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing curriculum knowledge in line with school requirements
  • Implementing the school’s behaviour management policies and reporting concerns to the class teacher or senior leadership team
  • Setting and monitoring homework in line with teacher guidance
  • Providing support to students with homework and classroom activities
  • Administering class tests and assessments when required
  • Supporting and supervising Teaching Assistants where appropriate
  • Adhering to all school policies, including behaviour management, health and safety, safeguarding, and equal opportunities
  • Delivering pre-prepared lessons during the short-term absence of the class teacher
  • Ensuring students remain engaged and on task through effective classroom management
  • Leading and managing the classroom without the need to plan lessons
  • Supporting students’ learning and encouraging participation
  • Collecting completed work and returning it to the class teacher
