Job Description

Are you a skilled and practical individual with a passion for supporting creative learning? We’re seeking experienced Design & Technology Technicians to join our pool of supply staff, providing vital support to D&T departments across local schools. Candidates should have a solid understanding of manual handling, health and safety procedures, and a working knowledge of design technology tools and equipment.

Experience in a school workshop or similar technical environment is highly desirable, along with the ability to assist teachers and students in maintaining a safe, efficient, and inspiring workspace.

As a D&T Technician, you will play a key role in maintaining workshop areas, preparing materials and equipment for lessons, and ensuring that health and safety standards are met. You’ll work closely with teaching staff to support practical lessons across areas such as resistant materials, graphics, product design, or engineering.

Key Responsibilities
Prepare, set up, and maintain tools, machinery, and materials for D&T lessons.
Support teachers during practical sessions, ensuring safe and effective use of equipment.
Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and safety checks on workshop machinery and hand tools.
Manage stock levels, order materials, and maintain accurate records of equipment use.
Implement and uphold Health & Safety procedures, including manual handling and risk assessments.
Assist in the creation of teaching resources and prototypes when required.
Support students in developing safe and proper workshop practices.
Ensure the D&T workspace is clean, organised, and compliant with school and legal safety standards.

Person Specification
Essential:
Practical knowledge of Design & Technology subjects, tools, and materials.
Understanding of manual handling and workshop health & safety procedures.
Good organisational and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Flexibility to work in different school settings as required.
Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
Desirable:
Previous experience working as a D&T Technician in a school environment.
Experience with a range of machinery (e.g. band saws, lathes, pillar drills, laser cutters, 3D printers).
Relevant qualification in Design & Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge of CAD/CAM software and digital fabrication tools.
