Job Description

New Directions are seeking a Teaching Assistant to join a secondary SEMH school, supporting young people with their learning, behaviour and emotional development. The school is looking for someone with some experience working with children or young people, but would also consider someone who is confident, resilient and feels they would work well in an SEMH environment.

This is a full-time position and will continue for the rest of the academic year.

The Role

  • Supporting pupils across the secondary age range with their learning and development.
  • Working alongside teachers to provide classroom and individual support.
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs and helping them engage positively with education.
  • Providing 1:1 and small group support where required.
  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging or dysregulated behaviour.
  • Building positive relationships while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.
  • Helping pupils develop confidence, emotional regulation and positive behaviours.
  • Supporting pupils to remain engaged and focused during lessons.
  • Working as part of the wider school team to support pupil wellbeing and progress.
  • Following school behaviour, safeguarding and support strategies.

The Candidate

  • Some experience working with children or young people is required.
  • School experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience supporting challenging behaviour, SEMH or SEND would be beneficial.
  • Confident and comfortable working with young people who may display challenging behaviour.
  • Resilient, patient and able to remain calm in difficult situations.
  • Able to build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Flexible and willing to learn and develop within the role.
  • A genuine interest in supporting young people who may have struggled within mainstream education.
  • A positive attitude and the confidence to make a difference in a challenging environment.
