New Directions are seeking a resilient and enthusiastic Level 2 Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Trafford. This is a full-time, long-term role starting in September 2026, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The school supports children and young people who have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and disrupted education. Many pupils display behaviours that challenge, so we are looking for candidates with experience supporting challenging behaviour who can build positive relationships and provide consistent, nurturing support.
The Role
• Support pupils with SEMH needs on a one-to-one basis and in small groups
• Build positive, trusting relationships to help pupils regulate their emotions and engage with learning
• Support pupils who may display challenging behaviour using positive behaviour management strategies
• Assist the class teacher in delivering engaging and differentiated learning activities
• Encourage pupils’ confidence, resilience, social skills and emotional wellbeing
• Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to support individual behaviour and learning plans
• Help create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment where pupils can succeed
The Candidate
• Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent is desirable
• Previous experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour is essential
• Experience within an SEMH school, alternative provision, PRU, residential care, youth work or similar setting is highly desirable
• A calm, patient and resilient approach with the ability to de-escalate challenging situations
• A genuine passion for supporting children with SEMH needs and trauma-informed backgrounds
• Team Teach training is advantageous but not essential, with the opportunity to complete a fully funded Team Teach course through New Directions before starting the role
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
