New Directions Education are recruiting for a hardworking and motivated individual to work as a School Caretaker, supporting local primary schools in Cardiff with long and short-term positions.
Due the nature of the roles being temporary, all applicants must be flexible, reliable and willing to work in different schools in the area. Primary school caretakers will work split-shifts (e.g. 7am – 11am and 3pm – 6pm), therefore access to transport is highly desirable. School caretakers are also often required to work during school holidays.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall upkeep, maintenance and security of the grounds and premises. Previous experience in maintenance, trades work, health and safety or construction work is essential.
Duties will include:
Opening the school in the morning and locking up at the end of the day
Ensuring the doors, gates and windows are locked when the building is not in use
Carrying out daily checks of heating, boiler, and alarm systems
Carrying out day to day maintenance and minor repairs throughout the school
Organising external contracts for major work
Cleaning duties such as emptying bins and litter picking
Dealing with lettings, arranging chairs and tables for meetings, and clearing away afterwards
Essential experience for the role:
An awareness of health, safety, security, and hygiene
An excellent practical knowledge
Previous experience in a maintenance, trades, or repairs position with transferable skills
Desirable experience for the role:
Previous experience as a school caretaker
Experience carrying out legionella testing.
Caretakers are responsible for looking after a school site including the buildings and grounds.
The duties of a school Caretaker include:
General maintenance and minor repairs
Liaising with contractors
Managing heating and alarm systems
Security
Opening and closing the school
Basic cleaning
Key holding.
Caretakers must be honest, reliable and trustworthy. They must be able to work well on their own using their own initiative, as well as working within a larger team.
Candidates will ideally have previous caretaking experience; however New Directions will consider candidates who have a background in maintenance, decorating, facilities or security.
It’s mandatory that caretakers have a clear DBS either registered with the Update Service or a New Directions DBS.
